China Certificate Attestation for the UAE

No. China acceded to the Hague Apostille Convention in March 2023, and the Convention took effect there on 7 November 2023 — but the UAE is not a party to the Convention, so an apostille alone has no standing here. For UAE use, a Chinese document instead needs consular legalisation: notarisation, then authentication by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China or an authorised local Foreign Affairs Office, then UAE Embassy Beijing attestation, and finally MOFA Dubai. This is the same route China used before its Hague accession — the accession changed China's process for Hague-member destinations, not for the UAE.

Chinese degrees and transcripts need this chain for KHDA/DHA/MOH licensing and UAE university admission. Vital records — birth, marriage and death certificates — need it for family visa sponsorship. Police clearance certificates from China are required for UAE Golden Visa and long-stay applications. Corporate documents — incorporation certificates, board resolutions and POAs — need the same chain for UAE business use, which is common given the volume of China-linked business activity in UAE free zones.

You will typically need the original signed and sealed Chinese document, a colour scan of your passport bio page and UAE visa or entry stamp, a signed authorisation letter if a family member or agent holds the original in China, and a purpose letter where required.

The most common error is assuming a Chinese apostille alone will be accepted in the UAE — it won't, because the UAE isn't a Hague member, regardless of China's own 2023 accession. Documents submitted directly to the UAE Embassy without proper notarisation and Chinese MFA authentication are rejected. Any name mismatch between certificate, passport and Emirates ID blocks downstream applications. And photocopies or laminated originals must be re-issued before attestation can proceed.
