A Notary Public in Australia certifies the document first, DFAT — the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade — provides authentication or an Apostille, then either the UAE Embassy in Canberra or the UAE Consulate in Sydney legalises it, and MOFA Dubai completes the final UAE attestation. Depending on where you're based in Australia, the Sydney consulate route can be more practical than travelling to Canberra.
Skilled employment in the UAE requires attested Australian qualifications before MOHRE, DHA or professional regulators will process a work permit or licence. Family sponsorship using an Australian marriage or birth certificate needs the same chain before GDRFA or ICP will process a spouse or child visa. Setting up a UAE company with Australian incorporation papers requires attested corporate documents for DED or free zone registration. And higher education or MOE equivalency applications need attested Australian degrees and transcripts before MOE will open a file.

You will typically need the original Australian document, a colour scan of your passport bio page and UAE visa or entry stamp, a signed authorisation letter if someone else holds the original in Australia, and a purpose letter where the UAE employer, university or licensing body requires one.
The most common error is submitting directly to a UAE authority with only a DFAT apostille and no UAE Embassy or Consulate legalisation on top — DFAT authentication alone does not satisfy UAE requirements. Digital or unsealed copies are not accepted; only originals with wet signatures and seals qualify for DFAT authentication. Name mismatches between the document, passport and Emirates ID block downstream UAE applications. And photocopies or laminated originals must be re-issued before the process can proceed.
